About Rodent Shield Truckee —
We Live the Same Winters You Do
Truckee-based rodent control specialists. Mice and rats only. We know what happens to a cabin at 5,820 feet when it sits empty from November to April — because we’ve inspected hundreds of them. We built this service because the generalist pest companies in this market weren’t solving the actual problem.
Why We Exist — The Problem We Kept Seeing
When we started Rodent Shield Truckee in 2019, the Truckee and Lake Tahoe rodent control market had a consistent gap: generalist pest companies would trap the current population, bill monthly, and leave the structural entry points open. Homeowners — most of them Bay Area and Sacramento property owners managing cabins remotely — would get the same infestation call every October. Paragon Pest Control, which has served this area since 1978 and is the dominant provider in the market, explicitly states on their website that they do not offer entry point work. True Blue Pest Control handles 15+ pest types without mountain exclusion specialization and is closed weekends. Neither company was solving the root structural problem.
We built Rodent Shield Truckee around a single thesis: permanent exclusion with snow-rated materials is the only intervention that ends the annual return cycle. Trapping without sealing is an indefinite subscription to the same problem. Sealing with foam or galvanized mesh fails in 1–4 Truckee winters. The only lasting solution is 304 stainless hardware cloth, metal flashing, UV-stabilized vent covers, and snow-load-rated chimney caps — installed after every animal is confirmed removed and every entry point is GPS-documented.
What Makes Us Different From Every Other Truckee Pest Company
Rodents Only — 100% of Our Expertise
We don’t do ants, wasps, cockroaches, or termites. Every training hour, every material investment, every protocol refinement goes into one thing: mice and rat exclusion in Sierra Nevada mountain homes. This focus means our inspection accuracy, material knowledge, and protocol depth are categorically different from a company splitting attention across 15 pest types.
Roofline Inspection by Ladder — Not a Ground-Level Walk
Over 80% of active deer mouse entry points in Truckee mountain homes are at roofline level — rafter tail voids, displaced soffit panels, failed ridge vent caps, and foam-sealed HVAC penetrations that have cracked under freeze/thaw cycling. Every competitor in this market does a ground-level perimeter walk. We access the roofline by ladder on every inspection. That difference is why we find what they miss.
Snow-Rated Materials — Built for Truckee’s Climate
304 stainless steel hardware cloth doesn’t corrode. Galvanized mesh corrodes in 2–4 Truckee winters, increasing mesh opening size to deer mouse entry threshold. Expanding foam fails in 1–3 freeze/thaw cycles. UV-stabilized polypropylene vent covers survive Truckee’s altitude UV load; standard plastic degrades in 3–5 years. Snow-load-rated chimney caps don’t get displaced by a 111-inch storm. Every material choice we make is specific to this climate.
Hantavirus-Safe Protocol on Every Attic Job
Truckee is at 1,774 meters — inside the documented Sierra Nevada deer mouse hantavirus seroprevalence zone. CDPH confirms approximately 3 Sin Nombre HPS cases per year statewide at a 38% fatality rate, concentrated above 1,200 meters elevation. Sierra County confirmed an HPS death in 2024. Two Mono County deaths were confirmed in early 2025. Every attic entry we make uses a P100 respirator before entry. Every attic cleanup uses HEPA-filtered equipment only.
GPS-Tagged Photo Documentation for Remote Owners
Approximately 60% of our calls come from Bay Area and Sacramento owners who aren’t physically present at their Truckee property. We built our documentation process for them: GPS-tagged photos of every entry point before and after sealing, same-day digital delivery, close-out reports formatted for Airbnb and Vrbo case management, insurance adjuster review, and HOA architectural documentation. You don’t need to drive to Truckee to know exactly what was found and what was done.
No Poison — Ever
Rodenticide in a mountain cabin going vacant creates dead rodents in inaccessible wall cavities — the dead rat smell emergency that generates our busiest spring call type. Poisoned mice die inside walls, not outside. In a winter-vacant Truckee cabin, carcasses freeze and thaw repeatedly, extending the decomposition smell across multiple cabin-opening seasons. Mechanical snap trapping produces a retrievable body at a known location, removed same day. Zero wall-cavity carcasses. Zero hantavirus-bearing decomposition in inaccessible spaces.

California SPCB Licensed — Verify Us Directly
Our service is performed under California Structural Pest Control Board (SPCB) Branch 2 licensing — the license required by California law for any company performing household pest control (including rodents) for compensation. Branch 2 licensing requires continuing education hours at each renewal cycle and is verifiable through the SPCB’s public license lookup at pestboard.ca.gov.
California BPC § 8520 requires every structural pest control operator to hold a valid SPCB license. Ask any pest company you’re considering for their license number and verify it before scheduling. It takes 30 seconds and it’s a matter of public record.
